 linking words

 AND , ALSO and BUT

ALSO means the same as AND  but it comes in a second sentence. It comes in the middle os the sentence next to the verb.

Example: Tim,Robin and Mark always study and do their homework at school
They also play football during breaktime
Tim always knows all the answers but Robin and Mark don't

THINK ABOUT HOW THE WORDS IN BRACKETS COULD BE ARRANGED TO FORM SENTENCES

1. My son's birthday is in November .................... (mine/but/January/in/is).
2. She gets a taxi to the airport............................. (then/bus/she/a/and/gets).
3. We have a meal in a restaurant on Mum's birthday. .................. (to/We/on/Dad's/also/go/a restaurant/birthday)
4. We go to museums and art galleries.  .......................... (also/We/do/ sightseeing/a lot of).

                                          BUT and HOWEVER

BUT and HOWEVER have the same meaning. However starts a new sentence and there is a comma after it. We use it more  written English.

Example: I don't eat a lot of sweets but I keep on putting weight.
The doctor said  I have to lose weight and gave me a diet to follow. However, I keep on putting weight.

Use the cues to make sentences with BUT or HOWEVER.

1. My friends are great/ they don't always do their homework.(but)
2.Many of the students inmy class are good students / some are not. (However)
3. A lot of our teachers are women / we have some men teachers. (However)
